Thyroid Disorder Q & A

What are thyroid disorders?

Thyroid disorders are medical conditions that affect your thyroid gland, which is a small gland located in the front part of your neck. It produces thyroid hormones that control your body’s metabolism and many other processes. A thyroid hormone imbalance can lead to unpleasant symptoms and, sometimes, serious complications when left untreated.

What type of thyroid disorder might I have?

Common thyroid disorders you could encounter include:

  • Hypothyroidism - low thyroid hormone levels
  • Hyperthyroidism - high thyroid hormone levels
  • Thyroid nodules - bumps in your thyroid gland
  • Goiter - enlarged thyroid gland
  • Thyroiditis - thyroid gland inflammation
  • Thyroid gland cancer

Dr. Lee has extensive training in treating every thyroid disorder and other hormone imbalances. Getting the proper treatment can dramatically improve the way you feel.

What are the symptoms of a thyroid disorder?

Common symptoms of a thyroid disorder include:

  • Fatigue
  • Sleeping problems
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Changes in appetite
  • Mood changes
  • Depression
  • Heat or cold sensitivity
  • Skin changes
  • Hair changes
  • Menstruation changes in women
  • Forgetfulness
  • Depression

The cause of a thyroid disorder isn’t always clear. It could result from underlying medical conditions, iodine deficiency, genetic factors, or hormone changes associated with pregnancy.

Schedule an evaluation at Southlake Endocrinology PLLC: Do-Eun Lee, MD, at the first sign of a problem, as early detection and treatment of hormone imbalance is important.

How do you diagnose and treat a thyroid disorder?

To find out if you have a thyroid disorder, Dr. Lee reviews your symptoms and your medical history. She checks your vital signs, completes a physical exam, and feels the thyroid gland in your neck. She uses blood tests to assess thyroid hormone levels and detect or rule out additional medical problems.

Dr. Lee performs thyroid ultrasounds, as well as biopsies, in her office. She offers radiofrequency ablation, which is a revolutionary approach to treating benign thyroid nodules. Additional treatments for thyroid disorders include medications, diet and lifestyle changes, radioactive iodine, and surgery to remove all or part of the thyroid gland.
